Here’s another beer from Cleveland’s Platform brewery, Paranormal Hoptivity West Coast Style IPA. Like most Platform beers, there’s not much about it on the brewery website. Platform beers do, however, come with good information on the label. For example, I know that the beer is brewed from:
MALT:
2-ROW
CARAPILS
CRYSTAL 15
HOPS:
GALENA
AMARILLO
ELDORADO
GALAXY
YEAST:
AMERICAN ALE
What to expect? The malts are promising for a beer with some body. Galena hops are high alpha acid and often used for bittering, Amarillos are known for their citrus character, El Dorado throw off tropical notes and Galaxy offers citrus and some fruit as well.
Paranormal Hoptivity West Coast Style IPA has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume according to my can label. Platform beers are not sold in Georgia, but I got a can from Dave Coulter.
Paranormal Hoptivity West Coast Style IPA pours to a bright orange color with a thick foamy head and a citrus fruit and herbal hop nose. Taking a sip, there’s a medium body of caramel malt up front followed by bold citrus, juicy orange and bitter grapefruit rind with earthy herbal oregano and grassy notes all leading into a dry bitter finish. Very tasty indeed, I didn’t get any tropical fruit here but to be fair this can has about 4 months age on it (constantly refrigerated) and those are the flavors that don’t survive as well as the citrusy notes do.
Still and all, this was a tasty little treat and I greatly enjoyed it. I think you will, too.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
