Mill Pond Dirty Blond Ale

Review Date 10/24/2020  By John Staradumsky

Here is another beer my daughter brought back from Florida for me: Oyster City Mill Pond Dirty Blonde Ale. This was back in July, and I’ve kept the beer refrigerated since then, and recently stumbled on it in my garage beer fridge. This happens to me all the time, beers go in the fridge, I drink some, then more go in and stuff gets pushed around and hidden.

There’s a story behind this beer, too. My daughter and her boyfriend went to Destin in July, and I was not happy about it. It was the midst of Covid, and Florida was a hot spot. Far be it from kids to listen to their parents, so she went and luckily did not get sick. She brought me back beer, as if to assuage her guilt. Damn. She know how to play me.

Assorted beers from Oyster City of Apalachicola were amongst those she got me. She took pictures of the beer store’s selection and set them to me. How neat is that? Jess, if you’re reading this, you’re such a good daughter.

The brewery says this about the beer on their website:

ALMOST-EASY-ALE WITH A WELL-BALANCED, CRAFTY MALT STRUCTURE. HOPPED WITH AHTANUM, SHE PAIRS WELL WITH OYSTERS, SUNNY BEACHES AND SALT WATER.

Hey, I’m not yelling at ya, they are. Most breweries usually have a lighter offering for the non-committed craft beer drinker, and this is (I think) that beer for Oyster City.

Oyster City Mill Pond Dirty Blonde has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume per my can and the website. It was running $9.99 a six-pack in Destin. My sample is stamped CANNED ON 03/03/2020 and I drank it on October 21st.

Oyster City Mill Pond Dirty Blonde pours to a, well, dirty blonde color with a light head of fizzy foam and a soft biscuity malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a light to medium body with bready, biscuity notes and a balancing, crisp hop bitterness. That’s about all there is to this one, and that’s about par for the course for the style.

I would drink it again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
