Spinach Double Dry Hopped India Pale Ale
Review Date 5/13/2024 By John Staradumsky
Let me tell you, New York’s Other Half Brewing has a LOT of different beers. I’ve only started to scratch the surface of this wide selection, but all you tickers out there rejoice, Other Half has you in mind. You can’t blame them, really. beer geeks are a fickle lot. Even having said all that, as I peruse the beers listed on the Other Half website, they have 10 pages of brews. With 20 beers per page. OK, page ten only has 9 beers on it (I’m sure they’re working on that), but that is still 189 different brews.
As things usually work out, the beer I was researching, Spinach Double Dry Hopped India Pale Ale, was on the very last page. Here’s what Other Half says about it:
A hazy IPA brewed with a hand-selected blend of hops giving notes of tangerine, mango, bright stone fruits, and gooseberry.
I am not sure what any of that has to do with spinach, but there you go. With all of those beers they were probably running out of names, the brewer was having spinach for dinner, and the rest is history. Or maybe not. Who knows?
Hops used, from the label:
Citra, El Dorado, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin
Other Half Spinach Double Dru Hopped India Pale Ale has an alcohol content of 7% by volume and I paid $4.99 for a pint can from Half Time. That’s not much more per unit than the $16.99 a 4-pack Total Wine sells it for at their Laurel, Maryland store. My can was stamped 05/24/24 on the bottom.
Spinach Double Dry Hopped India Pale Ale pours to a hazy orange color with a thick very creamy white head of foam and a nose of bright citrus and slightly dank hops. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and a tad pasty but light in body to my taste, perhaps too much so. Still, it’s refreshing and drinkable and full of citrusy orange and tangerine zest and pulp. It’s slightly dank and vegetal and reminiscent of, well, spinach. Finishes gently bitter with citrus zest.
These Other Half IPAs all tend to be similar methinks, and this one is very juicy like most, but has a touch of dankness that makes it a little different, if only a little.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
