So what’s so Christmasy about Oskar Blues Priscilla American Wit? Nothing that I can think of. Still, Taco Mac released it as one of their “Christmas in July” beers for 2016. They did have more traditional holiday brew like Anchor Our Special Ale (the 2014 release mind you) and Gouden Carolus Noel, but why they call Priscilla a Christmas ale is quite beyond my capacity.
In my reckoning (and that of Oskar Blues I’m quite sure) Priscilla is a summer beer. It’s their take on the Belgian Wit style, which the Belgians drink all year long, but I find most refreshing in winter. The use of orange peel and coriander on top of tart crackery wheat makes the style eminently drinkable, quenching, and refreshing. That’s just what one wants in the dog days of summer.
From the Oskar Blues website:
This AmeriCAN take on the Belgian Classic Wit, featuring orange peel and coriander spice emanated from the basement blues music legacy Dave McIntyre (Oskar Blusologist) built at the original Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons, CO. On draft for over a decade, Priscilla's zesty citrus and light fresh baked bread aromas mix with spicy, fruity fermentation. Light bodied with a subtle savory spice accent and a dry, lightly tart finish you can nearly feel the flicker of the neon and sounds of the King. White Wit Wheat.
Oskar Blues Priscilla American Wit has an alcohol content of 5.2% by volume with 20 IBUs. It was released for 2016 in June and I enjoyed it towards the end of July for just $5.50 for a 20-ounce mug. Total Wine sells it here for $9.99 a six-pack in cans.
My mug of Oskar Blues Priscilla American Wit arrived a bright orange golden in color with a thick fluffy head and big coriander notes in the nose with a hint of citrus to boot. Taking a sip, I get appropriate maltiness to the style with tart crackery wheat, more coriander spice, orangey citrus, and a dry spicy and bright citric hop finish.
Not my idea of a Christmas beer, but we can get creative for Christmas in July, and Oskar Blues Priscilla sure is a treat to beat the July heat. Don’t miss it!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
