I’m on a saison kick. For a while, I was saisoned out (you might say), but lately I’ve been drinking some good ones, and as a result you might say that saison is back in saison. Ahem. Saison does mean season, after all, and you can season your saison with spice or spicy yeast notes, and you can season it with a bit of age. Either way, if you’re drinking Orpheus Lyric Ale, you’re in for a treat.
Orpheus does some very interesting brews and makes them right here in Atlanta. I was just thinking the other day I don’t drink their beers as often as I should, so I picked up a few including Lyric Ale. It’s tough to keep up with all the breweries opening in Georgia these days, but Orpheus is definitely one to go back to.
Of the Lyric Ale Orpheus says on the can:
The beautiful music of Orpheus had power over the living, could move inanimate objects, and even hold sway over the gods. Lyric Ale is an ode to this profound beauty, which guides everything we do. We use a blend of hops from three continents and our house saison yeast to strike this harmonic balance of fruit and spice flavors.
Ingredients from the website:
Hops: Hallertau Blanc, Galaxy, Azacca
Grain: Two row barley, white wheat, flaked wheat
Fermentation: Saison yeast
Orpheus Lyric Ale has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with no IBUs given, but do I really care about IBUs in a saison? It’s one of Orpheus most reasonably priced beers at $9.99 a six-pack. This is actually the third saison I’ve enjoyed from Orpheus although the first “straight” one (the other two, Atalanta and Wandering Blues were made with fruit).
Orpheus Lyric Ale pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick foamy head and an appetizing peppercorn and clove nose. Taking a sip, the beer is dry and tart with delicious spices, more green peppercorn here for me in the palate. The beer finishes dry and spicy and oh so gently bitter.
Quite tasty indeed, a satisfying and tasty anytime brew with plenty of flavor. Thank you, Orpheus. This beer is an ode indeed to the profound beauty of the style.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
