This
is a "Saison Grisette Belgian-style Farmstead ale". Saison for short.
Beautiful blonde color with good carbonation, the head builds quickly and
fades just as fast. The nose is fairly non-descript, not a lot going on. The
palate is an enigma, a bit of musty yeastiness, but nowhere near as much as
I've come to expect from a Belgian sample. Spiciness is lacking as well. The
finish is fairly rich, subtly fruity and sweet with a touch of warmth to
boot (ABV is 7.5%).
When I got to the bottom of the bottle, I swirled the
remaining beer and poured it into a glass along with the roused yeast. The
result was slightly
clovey, reminiscent of a Bavarian Weiss. In it's own right, Hennepin is a
nice beer, and would make a fine accompaniment to fish or fowl, but as a
Saison it seems a bit lacking.
Update 5/20/2018: From the label: Ale brewed with Grains of Paradise, Ginger, Sweet Orange Peel. I paid a revisit to Hennepin on a warm Sunday afternoon in May. I was not disappointed. The beer is slightly stronger these days at 7.7% alcohol by volume per my label. It runs $8.99 for a 750 ML bottle and $9.99 for a 4-pack of bottles these days.
More from the label:
Hennepin is named for explorer father Louis Hennepin, the first European to visit Niagara Falls. Hennepin is a delicious brew for all seasons-spicy and refreshing, with Champagne-like effervescence and bright golden hue. Enjoy with Asian cuisine, seafood and spicy barbecue, or as a fantastic aperitif ale.
Ommegang Hennepin pours to a bright golden color with a thick fluffy but short lived spritzy head, a bready nose with spicy citrus and earthy grains of paradise, a smooth creamy palate with crisp malt and spicy coriander, and pungent ginger. The finish dries with spice, really the Grains of Paradise and coriander and perhaps ginger. The pungent citrus peel really comes through, too.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
