Welcome, friends, to another exciting episode of bruguru beer reviews. Today we have a special guest to comment on one of his favorite beers, Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale. That guest is none other than Game of Thrones own Hodor, servant of the House of Stark. Let’s see what he thinks of the beer.
Bruguru: Hodor, what did you think of Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale?
Hodor: Hodor!
Bruguru: I see. OK, is this the first beer in the Game of Thrones line you’ve tried? There are several. Which is your favorite? Fire and Blood Red Ale? Take the Black Stout?
Hodor: Hodor!
Bruguru: Ah, Three Eyed Raven. I liked that one, too! Say, “Valar Morghulis” means all men must die, kind of a creepy name for a beer. It was the also the last episode of season two. Did that White Walker army freak you out at the end?
Hodor: Hodor!
Bruguru: Me too. Have I mentioned Belgian-style dubbels are one of my favorite styles? What’s your favorite?
Hodor: Hodor!
Bruguru: Anything but White IPA? I can see that. Well, thanks for joining us today Hodor. It’s been a pleasure chatting and as usual, your economy with words is very refreshing.
Hodor: Hodor!
From the label:
When confronted with the most feared saying in High Valyrian, take a sip and choose your words wisely. For all men must die, and all men must serve. Enjoy rich aromas of caramel and ripe fruit with deep flavors of malty sweetness and fruity esters.
Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale has an alcohol content of 8% by volume and is very fairly priced at $8.99 for a 750 ML bottle.
Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale pours to a deep ruby red color with a thick creamy head and a heady black currant and prune nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium bodied up front with light chocolate and nutty malty notes followed by layers and layers of dark fruity raisin, prune, and a hint of black cherry. Gently funky yeast, cloves and star anise compete with a brown sugar sweetness on into the warming alcohol finish.
A subtle variation on the classic Ommegang Abbey Ale with perhaps a bit less body, Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale is still worth picking up if for the neat label alone. Don’t worry, though. You’ll very much enjoy the beer inside. And while it may be true that all men must die, they shouldn’t do so before enjoying at least one bottle of Ommegang Game of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
