Here’s another entry in Ommegang’s line of beers inspired by the HBO series Game of Thrones, in turn based upon the novels by George R.R. Martin: Ommegang Game of Thrones Fire and Blood Red Ale. In the series, “Fire and Blood” is the name of the last episode of Season 3. Ommegang Game of Thrones Fire and Blood Red Ale was introduced just prior to the beginning of Season 4.
Game of Thrones Fire and Blood Red Ale is a Red Ale (the blood) spiced with Ancho chilies (the fire). Mine had about a year and a half of age on it when I drink it, and no, I wasn’t watching Game of Thrones at the time. I imagine that a lot of the beers in this line are imbibed while fans watch the show, however.
From the label:
Born of fire, like Daenerys’ dragons, this ale’s deep, dark-red hue evokes their every blazing breath. Sweet malt succumbs to wispy dryness, tinged with nutty spelt, spicy hops and rye, as Ancho chilies portend piquant dark fruit.
Game of Thrones Fire and Blood Red Ale has an alcohol content of 6.8% by volume and I paid $9.99 for my 750 ML bottle at Bruisin’ Ales in Asheville, North Carolina. This beer was sold with 3 different labels, collect 'em all!
Ommegang Game of Thrones Fire and Blood Red Ale pours to a dark blood red color with a medium sized head of chunky tan foam and a slightly smoky, spicy chili nose. Taking a sip, the beer has soft luscious fruity stewed malt notes up front followed by gently spicy pepper notes that dance over the tongue, all followed by hints of chocolate, smoke and spicy grainy rye and spelt. This beer has aged gracefully and is very delicious in its subtle splendor with all the flavors coming together in perfect harmony.
Specialty beers like this are not around forever, so I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to buy this one again. I would if I could though, as it’s rather tasty indeed.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
