Wait what? There’s an Omaha, Georgia? I didn’t know that. When I saw Omaha Nada Banana Weiss on tap at my local Taco Mac here in Canton, I immediately assumed it was from Omaha, Nebraska. No siree Bob though! It’s from Omaha, Georgia, a small town on the Alabama line and just south of Columbus. Omaha has a population of about just 1600 according to Wikipedia-but they have a brewery. So they’re doing good down there in Omaha.
We’re glad to get their beer way up here in Canton, dontcha know. Omaha Brewing started selling beer in June of 2014 according to their website but mostly locally; last year they started to expand distribution to other areas in the state. Nick Fowler is the brewmaster here, and I’ve always enjoyed his beers at Red Brick. The owner Robert Lee and his son both work at the brewery, so it was only fitting that Taco Mac rolled out Nada Banana just in time for Father’s Day. You can learn more about the brewery as I did on their website’s “About” page.
Here’s how they describe Nada Banana:
Upon pouring, this beer is light in color with very little haze and a very thick head. Similar to traditional German-style Weissbier, this beer boasts huge banana and clove aromas followed by a wonderful taste of banana, vanilla and spices that finishes with a fruity, smooth aftertaste. The fluffy mouthfeel can be attributed to the amount of protein gained from the wheat which also leaves a beautiful lacing in your glass.
Omaha Nada Banana has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume with 15.1 IBUs (they had to get that .1 in there). I paid just $5 for a 20-ounce mug, a good deal indeed.
My mug of Omaha Nada Banana arrived a bright hazy yellow in color with a minimal head formation and really big banana and clove notes in the nose. Taking a sip, you get tart crackery wheat at first them more of the banana and clove with a hint of vanilla all leading into a tart tangy finish.
This is one hell of an impressive hefeweizen, but that should not surprise. Red Brick has made a delightful hefeweizen after all, and that skill has come to Omaha Brewing with Nick Fowler. You could have told me Omaha Nada Banana was Bavarian and I would have easily believed it.
In any case, they call this an “American Weiss” and “Georgia-Style Weiss” although again, seems pretty German to me. It’s perfect in the mid to high 90s heat we’ve been having lately. Even if it’s not a banana.
Update 8/3/2017: It's pint glass night, and Omaha brewing in featured this month along with Southern Brewing Company from Athens, Georgia. Had to work late but no worries, Taco Mac is right by my office too. $6 gets me 23-ounces of this clovey, banana laden hefeweizen with a free logo glass.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
