Did you know Chewbacca was a homebrewer? It’s true. Why, he himself came up with the recipe for Old Ox Brew Bocka Bock Lager with Coffee Added while on Hoth. It gets cold there as you might know, and so that wise old wookie decided to crank Christmas in the Stars and mix up a batch of brew with brew that was just the trick to pass the time. While they all waited for The Empire to Strike Bock.
I didn’t get my cans of this wonderful treat from Chewbacca, but instead from his good buddy Jefferson Evans. Jeff brought me a few cans in March, and I saved some for Christmas in July. Old Ox Brew Bocka Bock Lager with Coffee Added is a winter seasonal for Old Ox, after all.

Old Ox Brew Bocka Bock Lager with Coffee Added has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 20 IBUs. Is this a bock or is this a coffee beer? Both, but the boldness of the coffee has me categorizing it more as the latter than the former.
Old Ox Brew Bocka Bock Lager with Coffee Added pours to a beautiful mahogany color with a thick creamy head and a heady coffee grind nose. Taking a sip, the beer hits me with more coffee notes first and foremost, bitter and roasty, but underneath it I get the nutty malty notes of a solid bock. It’s chewy malty in mouthfeel and finishes very bitter from the coffee, which is not at all bock like. Still, this is very tasty indeed.
I am impressed, the combination of bitter roasty coffee on top of nutty toasty malt is a winner. It’s so good you’ll want another, but be careful. Too mnay of these bad boys could give you a Han-gover.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
