So I just got a really cool box of beer from Dale Roberts, and the really exciting thing is that he sent me a slew of beer from Odd 13 in Lafayette, Colorado. Odd 13 has quickly become one of my favorite Colorado brewers, and with good reason. Sure, hey make a lot of IPAs, but who doesn’t these days? They also make sage use of Brettanomyces too, though, and make a lot of great beers with that unique strain.
Odd 13 Hawaiian Bartender is one of those beers. This is a tropical fruity sour blonde (as they call it) made with topical fruit throwing hops and, well, real tropical fruit. It’s amazingly refreshing and perhaps one of the better beers I’ve had from this brewery so far, and that in itself is high praise indeed.
From the can label:
Hawaiian Bartender is a sour blonde with mango and pineapple added. Fermentation with Brettanomyces and a Centennial dry hop impart additional fruity flavors and aromatics.
Ingredients, aside from the fruit:
Fermentables Rahr Premium Pils, Rahr Red Wheat, Flaked Rice
Hops Centennial
Souring Agent Lactobacillus delbrueckii, lactobacillus brevis, lactobacillus fermentum
Yeast six-strain blend of Brettanomyces
Odd 13 Hawaiian Bartender has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume with 25 IBUs. There is no canning date stamped on it, but Dale sent me a sheet with the packaging information of each of the Odd 13 beers sent. Hawaiian Bartender was canned on 5/26/2016 and I drank it on August 8th.
Odd 13 Hawaiian Bartender pours to a pale yellow color with a thin fizzy head of quickly fading foam and a resiny hop nose laced with funky Brett yeast and sweet pineapple fruit. Taking a sip, the beer is refreshingly sour and tart up front with funky Brett notes and juicy pineapple. The Centennial dry hopping adds an almost oregano like herbal character in conjunction with the Brett and the beer finishes peppery, tart and dry.
Odd 13 Hawaiian Bartender is simply outstanding, a perfect marriage of lactobacillus souring, Brett funkiness, fruit and hops. It was extremely refreshing in the hot August weather and dangerously drinkable; my glass disappeared in short order after I decanted.
Odd 13 does it again folks……
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
