Well, I was wondering when it would happen: Atlanta’s New Realm Brewing Company would roll out a “tropical” IPA. I’m not sure when New Realm Hoptropolis IPA was introduced, but I stumbled upon it on Black Friday 2018 and enjoyed a can on November 23rd.
New Realm is a fairly new brewery, opening in Georgia in 2017 and then buying the closed Green Flash location in Virginia. I visited the brewery for the first time in March of 2018, and their beers have since become ubiquitous to my travels in cans and on draft.
New Realms says of Hoptropolis on the can label:
Set your clocks to island time. This thriving tropical IPA transports you with its sunshine-soaked hue, backdrop of stone fruit flavor and welcome breeze of fragrant peach, pear and pineapple aromatics. Why? Because this exotic domain is Hoptropolis. The realm within the New Realm known for its idyllic hop vibes and juicy waves of fruit. So, pull up a chair, bask in the endless refreshment and enjoy until tonight turns into the best night ever.
New Realm Hoptropolis IPA has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with no IBUs specified. It runs $10.44 a six-pack at Target. The can I’m reviewing is stamped as PKG 10/02/18. Oddly enough this is the first IPA I’ve had from New Realm (I have had a double IPA from them however).
New Realm Hoptropolis IPA pours to a bright orange amber color with a thick fluffy head and a juicy pineapple and passion fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer is as thin malty as I expected but bursting with juicy fruit of pineapple, mango, pear and passion fruit. It’s balanced with a light to moderate bitterness in the finish and quite tasty indeed.
As these beers go, this one is about par for the course, but it’s local and its tasty and yes, it is a beer I would buy again.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
