Bavarian Prince Oktoberfest Lager

Review Date 10/5/2019  By John Staradumsky

I didn’t go to Total Wine one fine fall day (one fine 95 degree fall day mind you) looking for New Realm Bavarian Prince Oktoberfest Beer. No, I had seen on the TW web page that their new Akers Mill location (it’s fairly new anyway, I used to live in the area and I’m down here frequently) that that had Narraganset Fest marzen. Narragansett beers are from Rhode Island ( I used to live there, too) and this TW seemed to be the only one that ahd any.

And of course, while I was there, I looked around. And found a six-pack of New Realm Bavarian Prince Oktoberfest Beer. They had me at New Realm, and Oktoberfest. Still, I spied the label:

Named for Crown Prince Ludwig, the original honoree of the first Bavarian Oktoberfest celebrations. Bavarian Prince is a Marzen-style Oktoberfest Lager, brewed in the German tradition. This amber lager is malty, biscuity and toasty with floral hop notes.

The label lists “unique ingredients” of 100% German malts & hops, though I’m not so sure what’s unique about German malts & hops in an Oktoberfest Marzen. The label also says the beer pairs well with:

Bavarian pretzels, pork dishes ending in “Schnitzel” or “Wurst” and dancing in Lederhosen.

New Realm Bavarian Prince Oktoberfest Beer has an alcohol content of 6.3% by volume with 30 IBUs. I got my six-pack for $9.99, and you can get a 14-ounce draft at the brewery for $6.

New Realm Bavarian Prince Oktoberfest Beer pours to a bright orange amber color with a light head formation and a soft malty nose. Taking a sip, the beer has soft caramel malty notes, and faint toasted nuts. It finishes herbal bitter. Quaffable, and at $9.99 a six-pack a good deal, though the malt pops a little less than it did in the Narragansett fest I went there looking for and drank just before.

Would I buy it again? Certainly, especially on tap, either at the brewery or at my local Taco Mac.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
