New Belgium Sour IPA

Beer alert! Beer alert! This just in from Taco Mac:

NEW BREW ALERT 🍺

Our Chancellors had the unique opportunity to blend a new beer with the brewers at New Belgium Brewing last month and today we tap it!

The Sour IPA is a hazy, dry-hopped IPA blended with a barrel aged golden sour that's balanced and crazy delicious. It won't be available to the public until next Spring, but you're friends with us and get to try it early!

That beer is New Belgium Sour IPA, which showed up on the draft list just before my most recent visit on November 21st. New Belgium is the featured brewery of the month currently, but this beer was not announced until a few days ago.

New Belgium Sour IPA has an alcohol content of 7% by volume and I paid $6.80 for a 23-ounce mug, with a logo glass included. That’s all I know.

My glass of New Belgium Sour IPA arrived a hazy orange yellow in color with a thick fluffy white head and big orange juicy aromas in the nose. Taking a sip, there’s medium malt, juicy orange citrus, moderate sourness in the finish joined by citrus rind and minty herbal notes there.

I liked this! The citrus and minty hops combined with the sourness makes this eminently drinkable. Balance is the key, as the sourness does not drown out the character of a New England IPA, nor vice versa. How to classify? Although it is balanced overall, it reminds me more of an IPA than a sour, so I’ll go with that. I’m not convinced sour is a style, anyway.

I will look for it in the spring for sure!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
