Nova Cella Schlaubetaler Landbier

Well, well look who's here! It's our old friend Kloster Neuzeller Brauerei of Neuzelle, Germany. You wouldn't know it though (and I didn't know it) from the name of the beer I'm currently drinking: Nova Cella Schlaubetaler Landbier. There's no reference to Kloster Neuzeller there, though if you go to the page for this beer on the Webster Barnes website for the 2025 Biergarten Collection, you will find a link. These boxes of 24 German beers are sold at Costco, and if you hurry, you srill might find some left. There were a few beers from Neuzeller in last year's box, but they brewery was not new to me then. I enjoyed and reviewed their Original Badebier back in 2021.

The Webster Barnes website for the 2025 box says this about the brewery:

The Neuzelle Monastery is celebrating its 750th anniversary, established in 1268 by Heinrich III, Margrave of Meissen. Neuzelle, boasting two churches, two museums and a monastery garden is considered a “Baroque Wonder of Brandenburg”. The Neuzeller Klosterbrauerei, began brewing beers in 1416, and has maintained its traditional beer making practices. Once part of the Monastery, it is now run independantly, and is known for innovative ideas, originality and age-old recipes.

The Kloster Neuzeller website does indeed list this beer under the name Schlaubetaler Landbier, but no Nova Cella to be found. The Nova Cella moniker and label are apparently unique to this collection. The describe the beer as follows:

Auf den ersten Blick:
Das goldgelbe Landbier mit der feinen Schaumkrone wirkt herrlich im Glas.

Der erste Schluck:
Ein feinherbes Bier, das angenehm ausgewogen ist und mit Frische am Gaumen überzeugt.

Das Geschmackserlebnis:
Fein ausgewogene Röstaromen entfalten den erfrischenden, feinherben Geschmack. Ein Getränk für Naturliebhaber und perfekt für erholsame Wanderungen.

Which means if you don't speak German:

At first glance:

The golden yellow Landbier with its fine frothy head looks wonderful in the glass.

The first sip:

A pleasantly bitter beer that is well-balanced and delights the palate with its freshness.

The taste experience:

Delicately balanced roasted aromas bring out the refreshing, subtly bitter flavor. A drink for nature lovers and perfect for relaxing hikes.

Landbier means local beer, and in this case, it is a Kellerbier, or unfiltered lager.

Nova Cella Schlaubetaler Landbier has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume according to my can label and I paid $2.50 for it ($59.95 for the collection divided by 24). That is an amazing deal. My can was stamped

P 01/04/2025 E 01/10/2026. I expect the dates are in European format, meaning the beer was canned last April and they recommend you drink it by next October. I cannot imagine they would can it in January, sell it in September and tell you to drink it by year end.

Nova Cella Schlaubetaler Landbier pours to a murky yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of bready malt and meaty yeast. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, quite malty with distinct bready notes and hints of lightly toasted nuts. It finishes dry with slightly lemony, dry earthy hops. I enjoyed the maltiness and firm body in every sip, and if this were my local beer, I would surely drink a lot of it.

If you love malty beers, this beer is as much for you as it was for me. I loved it, and would love to drink it again.

Other beers in this collection:

Georg Rittmayer Rauchbier

Eibauer St. M Dunkel Bock

Eibauer St. M Hefeweizen

Eibauer Schwarzbier

BBW Wiesener Festmärzen

Georg Rittmayer Hausbrauerbier

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
