There’s nothing more refreshing on a warm afternoon in Rhode Island than an icy cold cup of Del’s Lemonade. Del’s is as much a unique part of Rhode Island as coffee milk, clam cakes, and New York System weiners, and on a recent trip to the Ocean State I found myself enjoying a cup of this frozen treat. As I sipped and savored, I only wished that I could bring some back to Georgia, and in a way, I did in the form of Narragansett Del’s Black Cherry Shandy.
Narragansett Del’s Black Cherry Shandy is a Rhode Island-only release hot on the heels of last year’s Narragansett Del’s Shandy, which unfortunately I couldn’t find on this trip. The black cherry shandy is a variation on Del’s frozen cherry drink, which is tasty if not quite as popular as Del’s Lemonade.
From the can label:
Great-Grandfather DeLucia made his first frozen lemonade back in Italy in 1840. Since then, his ancestors have introduced a number of other incredible frozen flavors at their Del’s stands throughout Rhode Island and across America. And now, Del’s and Narragansett Beer have teamed up to simultaneously launch a brand new flavor, Black Cherry. Look for Del’s Black Cherry slush in limited release in select Del’s stands, or enjoy the delicious Black Cherry Shandy collaboration that you are presently holding in your hand.
It’s refreshingly different!
Narragansett Del’s Black Cherry Shandy has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume with 14 IBUs. I paid $8.99 for a 6 pack-of 16-ounce cans. That’s a great deal for this refreshing blend of Narragansett lager and, as the brewery describes it, "tart juice of all-natural black cherries".
Narragansett Del’s Black Cherry Shandy pours to a ruby reddish color with a thick creamy head and a soft adjunct and cherry nose. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth light malty lager up front, then the dark fruity tart black cherry hits. It’s subtle to moderate minds you, but smooth and creamy and very tart as the beer warms. In the finish, the beer thins slightly but the tart cherry makes it refreshing and drinkable, finishing tart.
I really enjoyed this one for what it is, a shandy and a decent beer to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon watching Patriots football. You can’t argue with the price, and though I do prefer the lemonade Del’s shandy, this is a cherished beer as well that I would buy again in a heartbeat.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
