I just love July. OK, the weather can be a little hot (and it certainly has started out that way here in Georgia, where temperatures hit a sweltering 106 degrees over the past weekend). The month usually starts out with a bang, though (quite literally) as folks celebrate the 4th. Better still from a beery perspective, I like to cool down during July with an annual Christmas in July session. I like to store a number of holiday brews from the prior winter season, then break them out to see how they have held up over the past seven months or so.
This year, I’m kicking off my month-long festivities with a 22 ounce bottle (reasonably priced at $5.49) of Moylan’s White Christmas Spiced Winter Lager, a lager beer seasoned with spices. This one is new for me, and anticipations of something along the lines of Samuel Adams Winter Lager came to mind when I bought it. I’ve kept the brew refrigerated up until now, and curiosity almost made me pop it a few times earlier in the year.
I resisted, but today, July 4th, is finally the day. Hat Moylan’s says about the beer:
It's the most wonderful time of the year, with the kids Jingle-belling and everyone yelling "brew us new beers!" And so we did. In celebration of the season, Moylan's presents our White Christmas Spiced Winter Lager. Malty and smooth with a light tart and zesty finish, this year's Lager contains holiday spices, Curacao, Mace, Cinnamon, Coriander and White Pepper. This Holiday Lager will warm you and your sweetie inside and out. Share the love and make it a White Christmas. You'll get a kick out of it. Happy Holidays, and Slaint?
Moylan’s White Christmas Spiced Winter Lager pours to a burnt orange amber color with a medium sized fizzy head formation and a subtly spiced nose of cinnamon and dry mace. Taking a sip, the beer has good body underneath, solidly malty with just a bit of caramel. It’s mostly the spice I get though, the fragrant cinnamon, dry mace, and pungent coriander seem most noticeable. Some citrusy orange peaks through as well, and while I don’t get much in the way of hops in the finish I do get some very nice tangy white pepper, and that along with the other spices dries the beer very nicely.
I like this beer! I think it would serve quite nicely to warm the soul on a holiday winter’s eve; it does equally well cooling one off on a hot July one, too. The beer has kept quite nicely indeed, and at 6% alcohol by volume is easy to drink. This is a beer you can enjoy at Christmastimes white or otherwise, in December or July.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
