Whirling Dervish Coffee Stout

Review Date 4/23/2018    By John Staradumsky

Whirling Dervish? What the hell is that? I’m glad you asked that question. In a nutshell, dervishes are members of a Muslim sect. From Wikipedia: A dervish or darvesh is someone guiding a Sufi Muslim ascetic down a path or "tariqah", known for their extreme poverty and austerity. The term Whirling Dervish is derived from their habit to dance with pronounced twirling motions.

So then, you might ask, is Monday Night Whirling Dervish Coffee Stout named for those famed whirling dervishes? No, it is not, at least not directly. Rather, it is named for the coffee blend incorporated into the beer: Organic Whirling Dervish Blend from Batdorf & Bronson coffee roasters.

Batdorf & Bronson say this about that blend on their website:

One of our most popular drip coffees, Organic Whirling Dervish is also an excellent Espresso, featuring a harmonious mix of molasses, chocolate and cherry. This 100% organic, shade-grown coffee is a blend of Central American coffees roasted in two different styles and has been a part of Batdorf & Bronson's offerings since 1997. This blend is named after Omar, a mystic and whirling dervish who legend tells was the first person to prepare coffee as a beverage, a discovery that earned him his sainthood.

Monday night says:

We partnered with our friends at Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters to come up with this version of the classic coffee stout. At just 4.9% ABV, you could replace your daily coffee with this one.

I’m not so sure about that, but this is a pretty tasty beer. I paid $6.83 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac, and you can get it in six-packs of cans for $9.99.

My mug of Monday Night Whirling Dervish Coffee Stout arrived jet-black in color with a thick creamy head and intense roasted coffee notes and grassy herbal hops in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth with a medium body, chocolate pudding and black coffee, roasty and grassy hop bitterness in the finish.

I found Monday Night Whirling Dervish Coffee Stout to be a solid dry Irish stout with coffee, roasty and delicious yet smooth and drinkable.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
