Lambda Lambda Lambda Triple IPA

Review Date 3/25/2018    By John Staradumsky

Remember that old episode of the Brady Bunch? I sure do. Jan was complaining to her parents about her sister Lambda. “Well all I hear all day long at school is how great Lambda is at this or how wonderful Lambda did that! Lambda Lambda Lambda!” The fine folks at Melvin Brewing of Alpine, Wyoming were having a Brady Bunch marathon, you see, when they saw this episode and decided to name a  beer after it.

I’m pretty sure that’s how it happened. One thing’s for sure, Melvin Lambda! Lambda! Lambda! Triple IPA is a great beer, but a triple IPA? Is that really a thing? We’ll call this an imperial IPA, albeit an unusually strong one, but also a triple IPA since they seem to be popping up more and more.

From the label:

Dear Nerds,

A triple IPA? Is that even possible? How does that work? The easy answer: more hops, more grain (way more). Lambda is not a 90s East Coast malt bomb. Melvin makes beer from the future. This beer is made on the West Coast of Wyoming and has hops for days. Citra, Lewis, Chinook, Amarillo, Gilbert, Columbus, Takashi, Mosaic, Simcoe, Lamar.

Melvin Lambda! Lambda! Lambda! Triple IPA has an alcohol content of 13% by volume with 100+ IBUs. I got my can from the ever-gracious Dale Roberts. It’s been in my beer fridge for about 6 months (can has no dating). One the label they call it an IIPA (Imperial India Pale Ale I assume?) and RIIPA (which they state on the website is Rotational Imperial India Pale Ale).

Melvin Lambda! Lambda! Lambda! Triple IPA pours to a hazy orange color with a thick rocky head formation and a lush tropical fruit (especially pineapple) nose. There’s thick Brussels lacing and a smooth malt body despite the admonition it’s not a malt bomb. Taking a sip, the beer is full in mouthfeel with ample caramel malt, honeydew melon, citrus and stone fruits and a robust herbal bitterness and big alcohol warmth at the last.

Truly delightful, this is a big delicious malt and hop treat not to be missed.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
