Mayflower New World American IPA

Review Date 6/25/2021   By John Staradumsky

Oh happy day! I found a new online beer retailer that ships to Georgia, TapRM in New York, and I scored some great beers through them from the Northeast. Some beers you can only buy in 4 or 6 packs, and some as singles, but if you spend at least $75 you get free shipping! Nice! Anyway, one of the beers I bought was Mayflower New World American IPA from the Mayflower brewery of Plymouth, Massachusetts. I have only had one beer from this brewery, their porter, but liked it very much you see.

A note on the glassware: I have tried to find a Mayflower beer glass, but sadly Ebay never has any. I will, of course, keep looking. This Mill City glass (Lowell, Massachusetts) will do for now. Readers who enjoyed New England beer in the the 90s will fondly remember Mill City, as I do. Perhaps a trip to New England is in order to purchase a Mayflower glass at the source.

Mayflower says:

New World American IPA is a 6% unfiltered IPA that is built on pale malt with wheat malt added for head retention and a smooth mouthfeel. The beer is loaded with El Dorado, Mosaic, and Citra hops creating big aromas of pineapple and mango.

I paid $4.99 for my can of Mayflower New World American IPA from TapRM. Total Wine sells it for $11.49 the 4-pack of int cans-but not in Georgia. My can was stamped PKG 12/22/20 so a little long in the tooth when I received it on June 10th. I drank it on June 17th. It was no worse for the age on it.

Mayflower New World American IPA pours to a hazy orange color with a thick fluffy white head and a juicy citrus and tropical fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and packed with juicy pineapple, orange, bitter orange rind, grapefruit rind in the long dry bitter finish. Quite tasty!

I had three ancestors on the Mayflower, one of them being Governor William Bradford. I think they would have enjoyed this citrusy, tropical IPA. They did land in Plymouth, after all, their victuals being much spent-especially their beer.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
