Don't you just love modern technology? Here I am sitting at the bar of Max Lagers American Grill and Brewery in downtown Atlanta, sipping a beautiful bulb-shaped glass of their incredible Pumpkin Wit beer and telling the world what I think about it. What's better than that? Being the pumpkin beer aficionado that I am, I made a beeline for Max Lagers as soon as they announced this beer would be on. In the past, they've done a unique Pumpkin Dunkelweizen, so I was excited to see how well this latest concoction would be executed. And did I mention I just love pumpkin beer?
Max Lagers describes their Pumpkin Wit as "A Belgian inspired Ale made with roasted pumpkin and candi sugar and spiced with coriander, ginger, clove and cinnamon. Fermented with a trappist ale yeast." The beer has 18 IBUs and 6.5% alcohol by volume. What do I think?
Max Lagers Pumpkin Wit pours to a deep orange color with a thick creamy head formation and a spicy cinnamon-infused pumpkin nose. I'm getting lots of stringy, vegetal real pumpkin flavor here, and then all the spices come through: cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and the clove. The ginger really stands out as does the clove, while the roasted pumpkin adds depth and the coriander zing. The Belgian candi sugar comes through and imparts body and rummy notes. Spices dry nicely in the finish. This is certainly one of the most wonderful pumpkin beers I have ever tried. A lot like a big, rich, rum-soaked slice of pumpkin pie in a glass. If you're in Atlanta when this beer is own, don't miss it. If you're not in Atlanta, well, it's worth a trip in and of itself.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
