October is one of my favorite months of the year. The weather is cooling off, the leaves are putting on a wondrous display of orange and gold color, football is in season, and beer is in my glass. Not just any beer, mind you, but Oktoberfest beer, and when you can get it fresh on tap, well, it doesn't get much better than that. For years, I've made it a tradition to head down to Max Lagers American Grill & Brewery for a glass or two of their delightful Oktoberfest beer.
Usually, they'll have a tapping party when the beer is ready, and for a set price you can enjoy all the beer and German fare you can consume. I fondly recall a few years back sitting on their patio downtown munching on succulent grilled bratwursts, cheesy spatzel noodles, and pungent caraway sauerkraut all washed down by glass after glass of authentic O-fest beer.
Although I unfortunately missed the tapping party this year, I still managed to make it down to the brewery for a few glasses of their delightful Max Lagers Oktoberfest Beer. As usual, the beer pours to an orange amber hue not all that dissimilar to the color of the leaves this time of year. A small head rests atop my glass when I receive it, and a nutty malt aroma stimulates the palate.
The beer seems bigger this year than in the past (and is a bit stronger than the style usually allows at 6.5% alcohol by volume). But I 'm still getting lots of toasty, nutty Munich-malt inspired flavors that classic Vienna-Marzen Oktoberfest beer is so famous for. If you're in Atlanta in the fall, a stop at Max Lagers for a pint of this beer should be mandatory.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
