Maui Imperial Coconut Porter Dolce

Review Date 6/17/2017    By John Staradumsky

A few years ago, we went to Hawaii. Maui to be specific, and of course I dropped by the Maui Brewing Company. You know that I did. One of my favorite beers here was Maui Hiwa Coconut Porter, which I enjoyed in cans prior to hitting the brewpub. There was a real treat ion store for me there, a bigger and bolder version of the beer I had been enjoying so much: Maui Imperial Coconut Porter. I was in love.

All good things must come to an end, and we had to leave Maui and return home, much as we would have loved to have stayed longer. I was very enamored of Maui beers, but these are not sold in Georgia. Fast forward to 2020 and one of the few good things about this year was my discovery of Craftshack.com. Craftshack *does* sell Maui beers, and one of the first I bought from them was a big beautiful bottle of Maui Imperial Coconut Porter Dolce, a variant on the beer I enjoyed on the island.

Maui Brewing Imperial Coconut Porter Dolce is brewed with toasted coconut, caramel flavoring, vanilla, and salt according to the label. The beer has an alcohol content of 9% by volume and I paid $22.49 for mine, about the same as the $21.99 that Total Wine sells it for, though not here in Georgia.

From the bottle label:

The third of four beers in the Imperial Coconut Porter Variant Series, this delectable robust porter pours deep brown with a dark tan head.

Toasted coconut, vanilla and caramel notes lend to an aroma similar to a toasted marshmallow and flavor reminiscent of a fresh macaroon.

Maui Imperial Coconut Porter Dolce pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a heady nose of caramel, coconut, and chocolate. Taking a sip, the beer is thick and full in body with luscious notes of caramel, toasted coconut, chocolate and a subtle saltiness running throughout. There’s a hint of coffee and the beer finishes dry roasty and delicious.

You really do get the vanilla-marshmallow impressions under the chocolate and coconut, and the beer is nicely permeated throughout with all the flavors. The spices accent the coconut nicely, and this is a nice addition to the repetoire, though I do prefer the in your face coconut of the original version.

Now I just have to find the other three variants....

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
