Da Hawaii Life Lager

Review Date 2/11/2021    By John Staradumsky

How am I like Steve Winwood? That’s simple. We’re both back in Da Hi Life again. OK, now that we have that out of the way, I can say that I am here to tell you about Maui Brewing Da Hawaii Life Lager, or as they abbreviate it on the can label, Da Hi Life. A few years ago, we visited Maui, and of course dropped by Maui Brewing Company. We fell in love with the island, and I fell in love with Maui Brewing.

Maui sells its beer in several states in the continental US, though not in Georgia. One of the states where they do sell their beer is California, which makes perfect sense of course. As a result, Craftshack online beer store sells Maui beers, and I make sure to get one or another of them every time I buy.

Maui says on the can label for Da Hawaii Life:

This Citra hopped American Light Lager is a brewer’s best friend. One sip and you’re livin’ the best life…Da HI Life.

Maui Brewing Da Hawaii Life has an alcohol content of 4.6% by volume with 15 IBUs. I paid $4.05 for my can from Craftshack, and Total Wine sells the beer for $10.99 a six-pack in cans. Not in Georgia though.

Maui Brewing Da Hawaii Life pours to a pale golden color with a thick fluffy white cap and an inviting fruity nose of tropical pineapple and papaya. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, malty but quite fruity from the hops. The Citras add the pineapple and papaya the nose promised and some citrus fruit as well. The beer finishes balanced with a gentle hop bitterness. Hawaii

All in all, this is an enjoyable enough beer, though it reminds me more of a modern tropical fruity pale ale than a lager. The whole point of lagering is a beer devoid of fruity esters, seems odd then to add them back with hops. Hedonistically, though, I do like it well enough. I mean, who wouldn’t like da Hawaii life?

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
