Coconut Wireless Cream Ale

Review Date 5/28/2021  By John Staradumsky

About 4 years ago, we went to Hawaii, and it was the best vacation of our lives. I visited the Maui Brewing Company and generally drank a good amount of their beer wherever I went. Returning home, I went into Maui withdrawal, for the island and the beers, the beers not being sold here in Georgia. Luckily, I found them for sale online at Craftshack a few years ago, and there I get a steady of old favorites like Coconut Hiwa Porter and Pineapple Mana Wheat Ale, as well as new favorites like the beer I am drinking today, Maui Coconut Wireless Nitro Cream Ale.

Craftshack said this about Maui Coconut Wireless:

Ale brewed with lactose and toasted coconut.

Appearance: Bright golden

Aroma: Choke of coconut

Flavor: Creamy smooth mouthfeel; Sweet like a coconut macaroon

Choke of coconut? What the hell does that mean? I don’t want to choke on coconut, either the fruit or a beer made with it. There is a dish called Coconut Choka; it does not sound from descriptions I read like this beer smells. In the 80s, there was a disease called crown choke disease that afflicted coconut trees. I do not want my bear to smell like a disease. I learned all this, but the way, with Bing. Bing and beer can be so educational, wouldn’t you agree?

I got my Coconut Wireless a few weeks after placing my order and read this on the can label:

As heard through the Coconut Wireless, this smooth Coconut Cream Ale is bursting with toasted coconut, lactose milk sugar, and infused with nitrogen to add a velvety and creamy finish.

No mention of choking there.

Maui Coconut Wireless Nitro Cream Ale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume, and I paid $4.58 for my can from Craftshack, and Total Wine commands $15.49 a six-pack for it, or $2.58 a can, exactly two bucks difference per can. They don’t sell it in Georgia though. My can is stamped as canned on 09/24/20, and I drank it on January 26th of 2021.

According to the Urban Dictionary website Coconut Wireless is:

The Hawaiian concept of the Coconut Wireless is better than a cell phone! It is a wireless and fast way of communicating through word-of-mouth news or the sixth sense.

Thanks again, Bing.

Maui Coconut Wireless Nitro Cream Ale pours to a bright golden color with a thick fluffy nitro head and a nose of soft vanilla and toasted coconut. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and creamy in texture from the nitro and the lactose, with more of the vanilla and coconut notes the nose promised. It is gently balanced in the finish and quite tasty, although I would like a little more coconut.

Kind of like a coconut cream pie in a can. Why not pick some up and pour yourself a slice? If you can find it.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
