Each bottle of
Magic Hat ale comes complete with not only twelve ounces of great tasting
beer, but also a seventies-style wavy art label that will have you thinking
you've already had too much to drink. But wait! There's more! Each cap
features great advice printed on the underside. A few examples are "Never
hop in an open coffin" and "Don't eat with your feet." Now what would you
pay? Usually about $6.49 a six pack.
I first tasted Jinx on tap at the Rhode Island International Beer Expo, and
it was certainly the most buttery beer I had ever tasted. I marveled at the diacetyl level in this beer, it was like thick, rich, liquid butter.
Diacetyl is a chemical compound produced during fermentation that tastes
like butter or butterscotch; if you can't pick this up don't worry, it is
estimated one quarter of the population is diacetyl blind. Jinx is brewed
with Ringwood yeast, a strain noted for the buttery flavor it can impart.
Magic Hat's Jinx Strong Ale is said to be inspired by the strong ales of
Belgium. It is brown in color with good head retention and a slight
smokiness in the nose (some smoked malt is used in brewing this beer).
Unlike the beer I tasted at the Expo, the diacetyl level in the bottled Jinx
I'm drinking tonight is rather restrained. The beer has a delightful, toasty
maltiness to it which blends perfectly with the bitter hops and mushroomy
Ringwood yeast character in the finish. All of this seems much more English
than Belgian to me, but be it English or Belgian this is a great beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
