The name is an appropriate one: Magic Hat Humble
Patience is a beer served on a nitrogen tap pour and requires a little
extra time for that reason. It's hard to find as it's a draft only beer, at
least for now the company advises us. The nitrogen serving method provides a
smooth, creamy head on the beer, it's common on Guinness stout and beers
like Boddington's in those neat little cans with the widget in the bottom
that have become so popular.
By style this is an Irish red rich with dark malts, roasted barley and cara
chocolate among them. Malted wheat is used presumably for balance and
crystal for body. Alcohol weighs in at roughly 5% , about average for most
beers.
The beer is dark ruby in color with a thick and smooth creamy head. the nose
is fairly non-descript but the palate is rich in mouthfeel and slides over
the tongue like silk. There are subtle notes of chocolate and sweet malt,
the finish is balancing but not bitter. Good body to this beer. There's a
touch of Ringwood yeast character but it is subtle.
I enjoyed this beer at the Mews tavern in Wakefield, Rhode Island, and
ordered it with a bowl of their famous Cajun scallop soup. Ordinarily I'd
have a hoppier beer with this dish, sadly it's not the spicy delight it once
was. It's still tasty but extremely mild; it is however rich and creamy and
that character lent itself well to pairing with the creamy nitro-poured
beer. Try this with creamy soups and lighter fare.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
