So, my daughter went to Macon, and all I got was a T-Shirt. Well, OK, that’s not true. I can’t support that. I didn’t get a T-Shirt at all. I got beer! Yep, she stopped by the Macon Beer Company and picked me up some bombers to go and a logo pint glass. Wasn’t that nice? I sure thought so. The first one I popped was Macon Love, a blonde rye ale with cherry.
Macon Beer Company has been around since 2011, but I’ve yet to come across their beer. Macon is about an hour south of Atlanta and their beer is not distributed in North Georgia as far as I can tell. I certainly appreciate the punny names they give their brews, like Macon Love, Macon Progress, Macon Out, and Macon Music. With names like those, we can only hope they’re selling a lot of beer-and Macon Money.
Of Macon Love they say:
Macon Beer Company was determined to create a beer that captures the essence of a southern spring in bloom. Inspired by the pink blossoms of the Yoshino Cherry Tree, the Design Team sought to capture the vibrant aromas and soft colors of the first flowers of the season.
With hearts set on sweet aromas and heavy pink foam, the Macon Beer Company Design Team reverse engineered its way to a happy marriage of a blonde rye ale with fresh sweet cherries. This is our result.
Macon Love has an alcohol content of 5% by volume according to my label, although the website says 6%. They also say it has 20 IBUs. My daughter paid $7.50 for it at the brewery. I enjoyed the beer just 4 days after it was bottled at the brewery. Fresh!
Macon Love pours to a deep reddish hue with a frothy pink head and a tart fruity cherry nose. Taking a sip, the beer is light in body and soft in carbonation with hints of spicy rye coming directly to the fore along with tart, fruity cherries. The two play extremely well off each other and the beer finishes with more spicy rye and a gentle suggestion of grassy bitter hops.
Macon Love is smooth and creamy in the palate, and subtle to moderately pronounce don the flavors. That works in the beer’s favor, as each ingredient plays off the others and nothing dominates. I loved the beer, it’s tasty and delicious, and I would just love to drink this on again. It’s worth Macon a trip to the brewery for more, and it’s Macon me thirsty just thinking about it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
