Here’s an interesting beer that good old Jeff Evans brought with him to Georgia for our 2017 installment of Adventures with Beer: Lost Rhino Dark Hours Imperial Stout. Dark Hours is part of the brewery’s Genius Loci series, and isn’t listed on the brewery website, even though other beers in the series are. No matter, we’re drinking it and enjoying it and taking (at least some) notes on it.
I say some notes because Jeff and I were chatting it up and drinking some fine beers, including this one, after drinking even more beers at Taco Mac the night before followed by a few crowlers from Stout’s Growlers of Canton, and The Brick Store Pub and Twain’s brewpub earlier today.
I can’t tell you much about Lost Rhino Dark Hours Imperial Stout other than it has an alcohol content of 10.7% by volume, is ages on oak for 279 days, and mine was bottled on 12-21-16. It has a little more than a year of age on it as we drink, and it is truly marvelous.
Lost Rhino Dark Hours Imperial Stout pours to a jet-black color with a medium sized head of creamy tan foam and deep roast in the nose with wood to boot. Taking a sip Dark Hours has even more intense roast in the palate, espresso and a hint of licorice, strong woody notes, and a big warm boozy finish.
A wonderful imperial stout indeed, full of rich roasty flavors and a big benefit from the wood aging. The wood is immediately apparent and permeates the brew, and should they make this one again, or if you happen to come across a bottle, don’t miss it folks.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
