Here’s my first beer from the Lickinghole Creek Brewery of Goochland, Virginia: Til Sunset Session IPA. I’m on record of not being a fan of this “style” of beers (I don’t dislike them mind you, I just like malt in my beer), but I do like to try them when I come across them. Lickinghole Creek’s version was a tasty one for me.
From the label:
Golden in color, light in body and delightfully hoppy in all the right ways. ‘Til Sunset is the session beer hop heads have been waiting for. Low in ABV and high in hop flavor and aroma. Generously hopped with American Centennial and dry hopped again with even more Centennial for a fantastic hop flavor profile. Hand crafted to be enjoyed responsibly ‘Til Sunset.
Lickinghole Creek Til Sunset Session IPA has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume and runs about $11.99 a six-pack according to Total Wine. It’s not sold in Georgia, but I did get a can from the ever-gracious Virginia beermeister Chuck Triplett. My can had a bit of age on it but the glorious resiny citric Centennials still shined right through.
Lickinghole Creek Til Sunset Session IPA pours to a hazy orange color with a medium head of creamy foam and an appetizing citrus and resin nose. Taking a sip, the beer is light in body but not as light as some examples of the style. The palate is infused with hops, resiny, bitter grapefruit hops, and finishes long and lingering and very bitter and dry at the last.
Might be one of my very favorite examples of the style to date, a well done beer with a smidge more malt than many of these “session” IPAs and a nicely hoppy brew for a warm fall evening.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
