New brewery alert! New for me, anyway. The brewery in question is Left Nut of Gainesville, Georgia. On their website, they say they were incorporated in 2013, though they don’t say when they started brewing and distributing beer. I’m just seeing their beer for the first time tonight at my local Taco Mac. And of course, as you probably are right now, I wondered about the name. I’ll let them tell you how it was derived:
Many
have asked, "Why did you go with that name?" Fair question. The name, "Left
Nut Brewing Company," is built on a vernacular which epitomizes the
willingness to give up something of extreme value to do something or create
something unique; something for which we have endless passion. Recall the
phrase mentioned earlier, which started this whole thing. Conversely, it
also applies to not letting go of something cherished or of value: "Hold on
to the one you got left."
The name and the "catch phrase" just worked well with each other.
Well there you go. Tonight I’m enjoying Left Nut Hooch Shootin’ IPA, and I’ll bring back Left Nut to tell you a bit about it:
A light colored IPA brewed in the recently evolving New England IPA style. This IPA style is marked by reduced bittering levels on a par with or even lower than pale ales. Ludicrously hopped in the whirlpool and then further dry hopped to produce what is known as “juiciness.”
Left Nut Hooch Shootin’ IPA has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 25 IBUs. I paid $6.48 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac, and it runs $11.99 a six-pack in cans at Total Wine, about a dollar or two more than I think it should. The name of the beer, if you don’t know, is derived from “shootin the Hooch”, or kayaking or rafting on Georgia’s Chattahoochee river.
My mug of Left Nut Hooch Shootin IPA arrived a rich orange amber in color, slightly hazy but not nearly so much as many of these beers can be. A sniff revealed resin and citrus in the nose, medium caramel malt, bitter grapefruit peel, and surprisingly pronounced resin and pine. I didn’t get the tropical fruit but I did get a moderate bitterness at the last.
One of the better beers in this style I’ve tried though while it is very good indeed, ummm, I wouldn’t give my left nut to drink it again. Sorry Left Nut but you did set your self up for that one. All fun aside, I would certainly drink this beer again and found it very tasty indeed.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
