Lazy Hiker? Isn’t that a contradiction in terms? Who goes hiking if they’re lazy? And if you’re lazy, I don’t imagine you go hiking often. Be that as it may, I ordered a pint of Lazy Hiker Wesser Evil Porter (I love porter!) at Harrah’s Cherokee Multi-Tainment Center. The Multi-Tainment Center is hidden way in the back of the casino, but has its own entrance, too. It’s an area that is kid friendly (unlike the casino floor), with a large arcade and a bowling alley. And a sports bar, where kids can eat and adults can drink. They even have “beer tubes” you can have filled with draft and bring to you bowling lane, if you are so inclined. There are about a dozen draft beers to choose from, too.
One of my beer choices was the Wesser Evil Porter from lazy Hiker of Franklin, North Carolina, not far from Cherokee. I like the fact that Harrah’s features local beers throughout the casino. It’s North Carolina, of course there’s going to eb great craft beer.
Lazy Hiker says about their Wesser Evil Porter:
Rich, roasty, and black as night - for those with a dark side. Our porter plumbs the depths of darkness with flavors of coffee, molasses, and a soft touch of hops. Wesser Bald sits at 4,627 ft along the Appalachian Trail in our home Macon County. Our Wesser Evil Porter bears the name of this peak because it's a place we love. While Wesser may be high, the trip down to the gorge (1723') and then back up to Cheoah (5062') is the real tough climb - making Wesser the lesser evil.
Lazy Hiker Wesser Evil Porter has an alcohol content of 5.75% by volume with 30 IBUs. It was running about $6.60 a pint, but the prices were higher at the Multi-Tainment Center than elsewhere in the casino.
My pint of Lazy Hiker Wesser Evil Porter arrived jet black in color with a thin head of creamy tan foam and a robust roasty nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium malty palate appropriate to the style, subtle coffee, roasted barley, a hint of licorice, and a roasty bitter finish.
Very tasty, a vibrant robust porter that I enjoyed very much, and would love to enjoy again. I do love porters you know.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
