Yes, folks, it’s
that time of year again. Time when the days grow longer and hotter, and the
nights grow shorter and, well, hotter too. And, if you’re a beer lover like
me, then it’s time for wheat beer, too. As we all know, barley is the heart
and soul of most beers, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the only grain you
can make beer from. Wheat is commonly used, too, even if wheat beers still
need at least some barley malt, generally about half of the grist bill.
German wheat beers are widely known and equally easy to find. But the
Belgians enjoy them too, and make a unique version all their own. They spice
them with coriander and orange peel, something that could get you kicked out
of the brewers’ guild in Germany. That’s because the Germans are very
discriminating about what they put in their beer, and have their
Reinheitsgebot beer purity law of 1516 to prove it. Still, both Germans
and Belgians call their wheat beers by the murky white color the wheat
imparts: weiss in Germany, wit in Belgium.
Here in America, we call that white, and although not as ubiquitous as weiss
beers, more and more American brewers are offering up Belgian-style wits.
One of them is Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery, who offer one up simply
named Lakefront White. Milwaukee is, of course, known for its beery
history, as their baseball team (the Brewers) will attest. You can even buy
Lakefront beers while taking in a Brewers game at (gulp) Miller Park.
Lakefront White Beer pours to a hazy yellowish white color with a
medium sized rocky head formation and a very appetizing spicy coriander and
fresh fruit nose. It’s a warm day today here in Atlanta as I type, and I
immediately recognize the refreshing quality of this beer from the first
sip. The body is big on flavor but at the same time highly drinkable, with
the tart wheat making this a crisp and quenching brew. Spicy coriander and
zesty citric orange and even a little blueberry though there’s really none
in here. The spice helps to dry the finish, making it even more drinkable,
perhaps dangerously so.
I really enjoy this beer. If I could make one improvement to it it might be
to add just a bit more body, but that said the spice and citrusy fruit
flavors here are very nicely done, indeed. If you like
Blue Moon Belgian White , then you’ll simply love Lakefront White Beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
