March is here, and with it the promise of spring, warmer weather, and outdoor activities. More importantly, a new month means a new featured beer at Taco Mac, and this month it’s the local Jekyll brewery from Alpharetta, Georgia. That means at least four featured beers with glass giveaways every Thursday night. Week two (Thursday March 10th) found me sipping Jekyll Kinship Belgian Golden Ale.
Jekyll Kinship Belgian Golden Ale is a new beer for me and only available at Taco Mac (at least for now). There is no mention of it on the Jekyll Website but Taco Mac describes it as follows:
A light, medium-bodied golden ale brewed with traditional Trappist yeast. Distinct ripe fruit notes of orange, pear, and banana accentuate a peppery phenol aroma.
Jekyll Kinship Belgian Golden Ale of 6.3% by volume. I paid $6.50 for a 20-ounce mug. I got a free logo glass with the purchase.
That mug of Jekyll Kinship Belgian Golden Ale arrived a beautiful hazy golden color with a light head formation and not a lot going on in the nose. Taking a sip, I got some gentle yeasty spiciness with perhaps a hint of banana and some soft citrus. The beer finished a little thin to my taste, a good but not exceptional quaffing beer.
For me, this needs more "oomph" to it. If you're going to call it a Belgian Golden Ale I expect some of that character; I didn't really get enough to satisfy me here. I have to say I probably would not buy it again, as I much prefer (keeping it local) Wild Heaven Invocation for the style.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
