Try? Re-buy?
We’re here again at our local Taco Mac in Canton, Georgia and as I sip my beer and take notes, it’s a fine Saturday, the last in March of 2016. This month, Jekyll brewing has been the featured brewery, but the beer I’m currently imbibing, Pineapple Habanero Hop Dang Diggity IPA, isn’t one of the featured monthly beers. This one is a bonus, and a beer I made a beeline to Taco Mac for as soon as I saw it had been tapped.
There are three main reasons I did this:
· I love Jekyll Hop Dang Diggity IPA
· I love pineapple
· I love habaneros
Makes sense now, doesn’t it? This beer didn’t disappoint, either, as we’ll soon see. Primarily, I’d call it a chili beer as it doesn’t have the hoppiness of a straight up IPA (or they are well hidden behind the heat). You could call it a fruit beer, too, I suppose.
Here’s how Jekyll describes it on their website:
This limited beer is a popular spin on our Hop Dang Diggity Southern IPA. Experience the silky, sweet pineapple with the first sip, but watch out! That heat kicks hard on the finish! The brilliant sweet and spicy combination will have you reaching for Pineapple Habanero Hop Dang Diggity again and again.
Jekyll Pineapple Habanero Hop Dang Diggity IPA has an alcohol content of 6.7% by volume with 74 IBUs. This is exactly the same as Hop Dang Diggity, but the pineapple sweetness will balance off some of the bitterness if not completely fermented out, which would probably give you a higher alcohol content. I paid $7 for a pint, about $1 higher than it should be, and it’s high in six-packs too at $10.49.
My mug of Jekyll Pineapple Habanero Hop Dang Diggity IPA arrived a hazy orange color with a light creamy head formation and luscious soft pineapple fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, there’s a little caramel malt when you sip followed by bright pineapple fruit and vegetal pepper. Spicy heat starts low and then creeps up on you in the finish with a lingering peppery bite. Don't get much hops here, the peppers crowd them out but I'm fine with that.
I would like a little more heat here, but to be fair I always do. This one has a fair amount and is well-balanced all around. It’s slightly higher than average in price, but that would not stop me from buying it again. I enjoyed it far too much.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
