March is here, and with it the promise of spring, warmer weather, and outdoor activities. More importantly, a new month means a new featured beer at Taco Mac, and this month it’s the local Jekyll brewery from Alpharetta, Georgia. That means at least four featured beers with glass giveaways every Thursday night. Week three (Thursday March 17th) brought me back to an old favorite from Jekyll, Big Creek Kolsch.
Unlike the other three beers offered by Jekyll this month, Big Creek Kolsch is a regular year-round offering sold in bottles as well as on draft. Kolsch is a common style these days (what brewery doesn't have one?), often as a sop to the newbie to craft beer. These beers are quite like pilsners though they're ales so often feature a hint off ruit but are otherwise clean malty and crisp and very drinkable with a gentle hop kiss in the finish.
Jekyll says of Big Creek Kolsch on their website:
Big Creek Kolsch is delicately balanced beer style originating from the Cologne region of Germany and brewed according to Reinheitsgebot. We used only barely, hops, water and yeast under cold temperatures to give the style a crisp, dry quality. The ale yeast, which is unusual for a beer that is fermented like a lager, contribute to a fruity and slightly tangy taste along with “pear” characteristics.
Jekyll Big Creek Kolsch has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 24 IBUs. I paid $6 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac and that came with a free logo glass. It runs about $9.99 a six-pack in bottles here in the Atlanta area.
My mug of Jekyll Big Creek Kolsch arrived a pale golden color with a medium spritzy head and a soft biscuit malt and gentle fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp biscuity malty up front with a hint of soft fruit and a gently tart-tangy finish with the softest kiss of grassy hops.
Jekyll Big Creek Kolsch is a great example of the style and a perfect beer for warm weather sipping. It's a beer I really enjoy, and one I think you will, too.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
