Well, this is a sad day. I am no longer allowed within 100 feet of any Taco Mac here in Georgia. It’s true. You see, Taco Mac just served me a restraining order. Such a shame, too, as I just hit 575 beers on my Brewniversity studies and…wait, what? My server is talking to me…oh! It’s a Restraining Order Porter they served me! Never mind……
Restraining Order Porter is brewed by the Jailhouse Brewing Company of Hampton, Georgia. Ironically enough, I was just chatting with the fine folks down at Stout’s Growlers here in Canton about the relative dearth of good porter here in the south. Jailhouse only introduced their version in 2013, and it’s now back as a winter seasonal for 2014.
Normally I would let Jailhouse tell you a little bit about their Restraining Order Porter at this point, but since they have this really cool promotional video about it, I have provided a youtube link to it above. I can tell you that this is a porter brewed with figs for the holiday/winter season. Apparently it’s sold in bottles but I enjoyed mine on draft for $6.50 for what turned out to be 36 ounces.
The server brought me a 16-ounce glass instead of my hard earned 20-ounce mug, and to make up for it she brought me another entire 20 ounce mug. Bonus! Restraining Order Porter has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and 22 IBUs.
My Jailhouse Restraining Order Porter arrived a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and notes of gentle smoke, dark bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, I get a big roastiness in the palate, dark bittersweet chocolate as the nose promised, coffee, ripe plump fig sweetness, all with a very creamy and smooth texture and roast and grassy herbal bitterness in the finish.
I loved all 36 ounces of this one, and to be frank it would take a restraining order to keep me away from this one. Even then, I’d probably chance it. It’s worth spending a night in the Jailhouse after all………
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
