Welcome, my
friends, to the story of Jailhouse 4D IPA. As we shall see, this is an evolving
story, since Jailhouse 4D (Deep, Deep, Deep, Deep Undercover) IPA is a beer that
is constantly changing. Sadly, I missed the first three editions of this draft
only beer, but was lucky enough to catch volume 4, an India Dark Ale, at, Taco
Mac in Canton. Then I missed the next 7. But I am here to regale you with my
thoughts on volume 12.
Jailhouse Deep, Deep, Deep, Deep Undercover IPA Volume 12 is styled as a Red IPA, though personally I don’t think that’s really a substyle. This one has a name, too: “Molly Ringwold” oddly enough. If I were brewing it, I would have used Ringwood yeast and called it Molly Ringwood. It was tasty enough, though, with a milder alcohol content of 6% by volume and reasonably priced at $5.50 for the full mug pour. I lifted a mug of this beer in commemoration of the 6th anniversary of the passing of legendary beer hunter Michael Jackson August 30th, 2013.
Jailhouse says of their Deep, Deep, Deep, Deep Undercover IPA Volume 12:
So Jailhouse John says, “let’s do a red IPA and call it Molly Ringwald”. BRILLIANT! I know it had nothing to do with a teenage crush or the fact that he has a red beard. Sometimes that’s all it takes is a spark of inspiration. We’d also been toying with our redneck hopback and had some great success. With a slew of whole leaf Amarillo hops screaming our names, it was on!
Name - Molly Ringwald; aka - "Molly"
Grain - 2-Row, Melanoidin, C45L, C120L
Hops -Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo
Yeast - American Ale

Jailhouse 4D IPA volume 12 from Hampton, GA, lifted in memory of the Beer Hunter. Fresh local beer? Thank MJ. A brewery that has put out 13 different IPAs....so far? Thank MJ.
It is slightly reddish! Not a black IPA (that was vol. 10) but a very wonderful 6% abv IPA with some deep amber malt and intense resiny hop aroma and flavor to go with it. And the wings just arrived.....
So folks, what’s better than that? Enjoy!
