Seven Sisters Munchner Lager

Review Date 6/11/2021   By John Staradumsky

I got a crowler of Ironshield Seven Sisters Munchner Lager at Stout’s you see. And of course, I am here to tell you about it today. Don’t you love the way I just started that last sentence with a conjunction? Some people say you should never do that. But I’ve always liked linking sentences that way (there I go again!), and if some people don’t, well, they can get their own website. What that has to do with Ironshield Seven Sisters Munchner I’m sure I don’t know, although as far as conjunctions go, I am here to talk about Ironshield Seven Sisters *and* 5 Seasons Seven Sisters Munich Lager. So there you go.

Anyway, I got my crowler at Stout’s, and for some reason I was assuming this was going to be a Munich Helles (not a Munchner), mostly because it didn’t identify as a Munich Dunkel. Of course, this beer is neither; it’s really a Vienna Marzen which is, of course, also a Munich lager. 5 Seasons Brewery of Sandy Springs, Midtown, and Alpharetta (all in Georgia used to brew a Marzen under the very same name, and I should have thought of that. Since that legendary local brewpub chain sadly went under a few years ago, the name apparently was up for grabs, and Ironshield claimed it.

Ironshield of Lawrenceville, Georgia says:

The 7 Sisters were the original legendary breweries in Munich that hosted Oktoberfest. We see these as absolute heroes in the beer world. To honor these heroes we brewed our very own Munchner (also know as Vienna Lager) This beer has a rich amber color and full bodied with a malty finish, all accentuated with a hint of noble hop aroma. Brewed the authentic way... the way the 7 Sisters would have wanted!

Those original breweries are Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Augustiner Brau, Spaten, Franziskaner, Lowenbrau, and Hofbrau Haus. Paulaner acquired Hacker-Pschorr and Spaten bought Franziskaner over the years.

Ironshield Seven Sisters Munchner has an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume with 24 IBUs. You cab get a six-pack of cans at the brewery for $10.00; I paid $10.25 for my crowler from Stout’s.

Ironshield Seven Sisters Munchner pours to a bright copper color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of fresh nutty malt. Taking a sip, the beer is medium malty, toasty nutty appropriate to the style, with notes of toffee and caramel,  a fresh crunchy nutty maltiness, and a dry herbal hoppy bitterness in the finish. A very, very nice beer that I could drink all night, and I am glad I have a crowler to at least enjoy it for a good part of the night.

The depth of malt is impressive here, and this is definitely a beer that I would buy again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
