Divine Dubbel Abbey Style Ale

Review Date 3/1/2021   By John Staradumsky

Welcome, friends, to my second review (and second different beer) from the Ironshield Brewery of Lawrenceville, Georgia. The first, Sgt. Mackenzie Scottish Ale, I purchased in a crowler from Stout’s here in Canton. This second beer from Ironshield, Divine Dubbel Abbey Style Ale, I picked up in a six-pack from Target-also here in Canton.

I very much enjoyed the first beer I tried from Ironshield, and I very much like the brewery’s devotion to Proudly Brewing Authentic European Ales and Lagers. Too many brewers today focus on 50 different IPAs and as many (or more) weirdo stouts. To be sure, I like those beers, but would it hurt you to brew a few of the classics as well people?

Ironshield says on the Divine Dubbel label:

Trappist Monks have strived to perfect their brewing craft for centuries, dedicated to sustainability, self-reliance, and divine trust. By respecting the high standards set by Trappist Monks, we are proud to bring you a true Belgian-style Dubbel.

They further say on the website:

Our Dubbel is a deep red/brown Abbey Ale that is a rich Trappist style dark ale. It is aromatic and malty with some residual sweetness and tartness and a low hop bitterness/aroma. This is a high gravity beer best sipped and enjoyed out of a chalice in the colder months.

Ironshield Divine Dubbel has an alcohol content of 8% by volume with 33 IBUs. I paid $11.39 for a six-pack at Target. My cans are stamped PACKAGED ON 12/02/20.

Ironshield Divine Dubbel Abbey Style Ale pours to a dark brownish color with a thick creamy tan head and a nose of banana, chocolate, and clove. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with more of the chocolate, clove, and banana the nose promised. The malts offer chocolate and toasted nuts, and this is a very tasty beer overall, although some bandaid phenols detract. I don’t get the funky yeasty complexity Belgian Dubbels offer, but I do like this and would drink it again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
