Toasty Marshmallow Winter Stout

Review Date 2/15/2021 By John Staradumsky

It all started with a text from my son. He sent me a picture of an Ironmonger beer display at Target, and asked “Do you want any of these?”. That was a silly question; of course I did. One of the beers that immediately caught my attention was Toasty Marshmallow Winter Stout, their winter seasonal brew. The brewery, too, is right around the corner from where he lives. When this dreaded Covid is over, I intend to visit.

Ironmonger says about this beer:

Impossibly delicious imperial milk stout brewed with marshmallow and toasted coconut!

They use real marshmallows here (many such beer use vanilla to impart the notes), and the toasted coconut to impart the fire roasted marshmallow notes is genius.

Ironmonger Toasty Marshmallow Winter Stout has an alcohol content of 9% by volume and runs $11.39 a 4-pack of pint cans at Target. My cans had no freshness dating.

Ironmonger Toasty Marshmallow Winter Stout pours to a dark brown color, not as black as I expect with a stout, and was not quite opaque when I held it to the light. I was concerned; I should not have been. The nose hints at burnt toasty marshmallow, taking a sip, the body is full and chocolaty, with pillowy vanilla marshmallow flavor and toasted coconut adding the toasty part. Bittersweet chocolate reinforces, and the beer finishes roasty and dry. Warming alcohol spears at the last, too.

I was quite impressed with Ironmonger Toasty Marshmallow Winter Stout, you really do get the theme of a toasted marshmallow. I will be back for more of it next winter-if not sooner!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
