All goats have horns, don’t they? I think they do, at least the males. And that would make them horny goats, right? Hey, don’t blame me, I didn’t come up with the name for Horny Goat Wheat Beer by the GJS Sales Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin (read: contract brewed at the City Brewery). The brand website is just in the beginning phases, too, as I type.
The can tells me this is a Belgian-style white, and yes, I get that. Belgian Whites (Witbier) are known for their spicy citrus and coriander flavor, quenching tartness and smooth drink ability. You will find all that here, to a degree. The can also tells me that “Horny Goat loves big cans”….ouch. It then tells me all the reasons why cans are not as bad as the myth suggests for beer.
Horny Goat Wheat pours to a hazy yellow color with a hint of orange and a towering head of spritzy white foam. The nose is a tad tart and definitely inviting; a sip reveals a crackery wheat palate with the same tart character the nose promised. A hint of citric orange and a bit of coriander spice are just enough to get the palate’s attention, but just enough. A tart wheat finish makes this drinkable, too.
While this isn’t the best example of a Belgian style Wit you’ll find, it’s also not the worst. I think it could use some more coriander and orange peel flavors, but that said I only paid $1.99 for a 24 ounce can. The beer is sold in four packs of cans as well. The cans would make it easy to refrigerate, and ice cold on a hot day, I think this one just might really hit the spot. I’d take it over a Bud or Coors any day.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
