Hofbrau Schwarz Weisse

Review Date  10/26/2019   By John Staradumsky

Hofbrau Schwarze Weisse? What the heck is that? It’s a German wheat beer, of course, but the name may strike English speakers as odd once translated. “Schwarz” is German for black, and “Weisse” is German for white. So, it means literally “black white”, which is really a contradiction in terms. That said, weisse is also a colloquial term for wheat beer (aka weizen which means wheat), because hefeweizen is a hazy white in color. In that context, it makes a bit more sense. Or does it?

This reminds me of Trinity Brewhouse Schwarz Weizen, which was sometimes referred to as “Schwarz Weisse”. That beer debuted circa 1996, and I still remember it to this day. As I recall, it was a Schwarzbier with wheat more than a wheat beer with schwarz.

Back to the Hofbrau beer. This beauty is also known as Hofbrau Hefeweizen Dunkel. Whatever you call it, it’s a dunkelweizen in style. I had never tried this one from Hofbrau, so you can imagine my excitement when I saw it on the draft menu at the Troll Tavern in Helen, Georgia. I enjoyed it in the biergarten under the bridge, watching the river slowly meander by.

Hofbrau Haus says:

Out of the office and into the evening. Off with the suit and on with the traditional garb. No obligations, only possibilities. To a relaxed end of the day in the beer garden, the Hofbräu Schwarze Weisse is like the traditional decorative costume jewelry (‘Charivari’) adorning a pair of lederhosen. Gently refreshing with a velvety-soft finish. The amber dark color, the creamy head and a fine malty bouquet will delight seasoned grown men and everyone else who prefer a wheat beer with a strong character.

MALTS: wheat malt, Munich malt, light barley malt

HOP VARIETIES: Herkules, Perle

Hofbrau Schwarze Weisse has an alcohol content of 5.1% by volume with 14 IBUs. I paid $6 for my pint at Troll Tavern.

My cup of Hofbrau Schwarze Weisse arrived a hazy dark brown color with a medium head of foam and a nose bursting with toasty malt notes and banana. Taking a sip, I got a crackery palate with clove, banana, and toasted nuts; then subtle chocolate and a crisp tart wheaty finish.

Hofbrau Schwarze Weisse is spicy and delicious, a beer chock full of flavor yet easy to drink. I know I enjoyed it, and I think you will, too.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
