Do you like Heavy Seas Holy Sheet Uber Abbey Ale? I know I do. If you do, then do I have good news for you: Heavy Seas also offers a barrel aged version of this beer as part of their Uncharted Waters Series of specialty brews. Heavy Seas Uncharted Waters Series Holy Sheet Belgian Style Abbey Ale Aged in Brandy Barrels (say that 5 times fast) is sold in maltage dated editions in 22 ounce bomber bottles.
The first release of this beer was in 2013, and that’s the one I’m drinking with about a year of age on it. This was also released in 2014 as well, however. The beer getting aged in those brandy barrels is an uber strong Belgian Abbey Dubbel in style, and it does indeed age well both in the brandy barrels and in your beer cellar. At least mine did.
From the label:
Rich, complex and unique. Abbey style ales are transcendent, and ours stands proudly in the ranks. Aged in brandy barrels, Holy Sheet is a mahogany ale brewed with Belgian Abbey yeast, candi sucre, and unique crystal malts. Rounded, spicy caramel flavors mixed with vinous notes and oak overtones, this ale pairs well with quiet contemplation…
Ingredients from the website:
Hops: Warrior, Strisselspalt
Malts: 2-row, Abbey Malt, Wheat, Crystal, Chocolate
Brandy Barrel Aged Holy Sheet has an alcohol content of 9% by volume, about a point or so higher than normal for an abbey dubbel. IBU count is 38, and I paid $5.99 for my bottle, a fair price indeed.
Heavy Seas Uncharted Waters Series Holy Sheet Belgian Style Abbey Ale Aged in Brandy Barrels pours to a dark mahogany color with a thick creamy head of tan colored foam and a rich dark nose of prune and port. Taking a sip, the beer has a thick dark sweet maltiness to it redolent of plums and prunes, raisins and vinous boozy brandy. Toasted woody oak notes, a hint of vanilla, caramel, sweet rock candy malt notes, chocolate and toasted nuts are all over the place here, and the beer finishes sweet and boozy with a noticeable alcohol warmth.
Exceedingly complex and delicious, Heavy Seas Uncharted Waters Series Holy Sheet Belgian Style Abbey Ale Aged in Brandy Barrels is for sure amongst the best six bucks I’ve spent on beer in a long time.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
