Have you met The Cannon Crew? I sure have. Or, some of them anyway. The Cannon Crew are four beers from Baltimore’s Heavy Seas Brewing Company: Loose Cannon Hop3 IPA, TropiCannon Citrus IPA, AmeriCannon Double Dry Hopped American Pale Ale, and the beer I’m here to tell you about today, Double Cannon Double IPA. As you can see from the hyperlinks, AmeriCannon is the only member of the Cannon Crew I’ve yet to have the pleasure of meeting, though I will claim extra credit for having enjoyed the seemingly now-defunct Dubbel Cannon Belgian Style IPA, which gets my vote as the best of the lot.
Double Cannon Double IPA is a beer right up my alley, and I’ll tell you why shortly. First, though, here’s a little about the beer from Heavy Seas.
Hop
aromas blast out of this flavor explosion. Massively dry-hopped, with a
balanced malt sweetness, this irresistible force showcases the power of
bringing in the extra artillery. Hop cubed - then squared (hop to the
sixth)! We've kept the same malt recipe proportions as Loose Cannon, pumped
up to 22 Plato (from 16.5) and then doubled the hops. We employed the late
addition, whirlpool, hopback, and dry-hopping process that makes Loose
Cannon such a flavorful IPA. We've captured the beautiful balance of Loose
Cannon but we've doubled the firepower.
Here's why I love this beer so much. Ingredients from the website:
Hops Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade
Malts 2 Row, Munich, Caramalt
Love those classic malts and hops! Heavy Seas Double Cannon has an alcohol content of 9.5% by volume with 90 IBUs. I paid $6 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac and it runs $10.99 a six-pack in bottles.
My glass of Heavy Seas Double Cannon IPA arrived a bright orange in color with a minimal head of foam and citrus and resiny pine in the nose. Taking a sip, I got thick wavy chewy caramel malt with citric orange and grapefruit peel, long bitter dry grapefruit rind and an herbal finish with warming alcohol and a massive bitterness.
OK, I may have to rethink which of these cannon beers I like the best, because this classic American Double/Imperial IPA is amazing, really just a perfect example of the style.
If you happen to be visiting Heavy Seas around 10th and 11th August, why not reserve time at the Beer Bloggers and Writers Conference? This year it’s located in Sterling, Virginia about 60 miles away. Bruguru.com and Honest Craft Beer Reviews will be represented by beer expert Douglas Smith. Be sure to tell them the Bruguru sent you.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
