Here’s a beer that brings back memories: Hardywood Mac’s Milk Stout. Now, it doesn’t bring back memories because I’ve had it before; I haven’t. Back in the 90s, though, I worked for several years at Mac’s Liquors (now defunct) in West Warwick, Rhode Island. I was a patron there before I was an employee, and we had some amazing times selling and talking about great beer. Oh, and eventually drinking it.
Today I talk about and drink beer at a different Mac’s (Taco Mac). Was Hardywood Mac’s Milk Stout brewed especially for the latter? Could be. There’s no information about the beer on the Hardywood website, and only 92 check-ins ever on Untappd. One of them being mine, of course.
This is a milk stout of 7% alcohol by volume according to Taco Mac, and I paid $7 for an 11-ounce draft. That’s all I know.
My glass of Hardywood Mac’s Milk Stout arrived a jet-black color with a thin cap of tan foam and subtle roast in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth malty palate with chocolate and richness from the lactose and a very warm alcohol finish.
At 7% alcohol by volume this is one of the strongest milk stouts I’ve had the pleasure to try. It’s very tasty, and we would have loved selling it at Mac’s Liquors way back in the 90s. For now, I’m loving drinking it Taco Mac, and enjoying my musings on a Tale of Two Macs.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
