Cyclone Larry India Pale Ale

Review Date 3/2/2020  By John Staradumsky

Times they are a-changing! Grumpy Old Men Brewing of Blueridge, Georgia is now run by a grumpy old man. The brewery was founded in 2012, but the original two Grumpy Old Men that founded it sold in 2018. Hey, they were ready to retire, and it was time. The good news is the beer is as good as it ever was, as I can attest to after enjoying a can of Cyclone Larry India Pale Ale.

From the brewery website:

Cyclone Larry is another of our regular IPAs that is essentially an unfiltered Double IPA that’s been aggressively hopped resulting in a wonderful IPA that's juicy and packed with fruity and floral flavors.

Everyone has a hazy “New England” style IPA these days, so why not Grumpy Old Men? Theirs is a good one I’ll have you know, they call it a double IPA though at 6.9% alcohol by volume Cyclone Larry India Pale Ale straddles the line between IPA and double IPA. The only downside is the price: Total Wine sells it for $12.99 a six-pack, about two bucks more than I think it should sell for.

Grumpy Old Men Cyclone Larry India Pale Ale pours to a hazy yellow color with a medium creamy head and a citrus juicy nose fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with citrus and pineapple fruit and a long dry earthy herbal hop bitterness emerging, and then really exploding in the finish.

Cyclone Larry India Pale Ale is very good indeed, to style and hedonistically I give it 4.5 stars, taking back a half star for the high price.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
