Soul Style IPA

Review Date 5/15/2018   By John Staradumsky

Gone in a flash! It seems like that’s what happened to San Diego’s Green Flash
Brewing Company. To be sure, the company is stillin business, and still brewing tasty beer. Much has changed, however. The company’s 16-month-old Virginia Beach expansion was shuttered and then sold to Atlanta’s New Realm Brewery. Green Flash itself was sold to a group of investors. And Green Flash has pulled up stakes and withdrawn from East Coast beer markets.

Georgia is one of those markets, so when I saw Green Flash Soul Style IPA at Stouts Growlers here in Canton, I got a crowler while the getting was good. Green Flash will likely soon disappear from store shelves in bottled and canned form; draft will be the quickest form to go. Somehow, I had not tried Soul Style before, so it was now or never (in Georgia anyway).

Soul Style is a staple year-round offering from Green Flash. They say on their website:

Our brewers rip—creating huge and complex double and triple IPAs at the pinnacle of craft beer enlightenment. Soul Style is their effortless and pure manifestation of the Single IPA. Citra, Simcoe, and Cascade hops are layered, allowing bright tropical waves of flavorful citrus and floral notes to break gently on the palate. Get stoked on a laid back single and ride a wave to soothe your soul.

Green Flash Soul Style IPA has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 75 IBUs. It runs $9.99 a six-pack in bottles at Total Wine, and I paid $10.50 for a 32 ounce crowler at Stout’s.

Green Flash Soul Style IPA pours to a pale orange amber color with a medium head of foam and a lush tropical fruit nose. Taking a sip, the beer bursts with tropical notes of passion fruit but also grapefruit citrus and a bit of resin with a thin maltiness and a sharp long dry bitter grassy finish. This is very good indeed, with more of the classic citrus-pine than the tropical and a sharp lemon citrus rind bitterness.

I like this one well enough, and it’s bittersweet indeed to discover it only when I know I can’t get it anymore. Still and all, better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
