Now back to the bar. The bar itself is over 100 years old, and supposedly
was a popular spot for the one and only Eliot Ness to park his behind when
he wasn’t busy going after Al Capone. There are holes in the bar that
allegedly came from bullets fired from Ness’ gun. In tribute, Great Lakes
has named their award-winning Vienna Lager after Ness.
What is Vienna Lager? It’s a style of beer very similar to what would be
called “Maerzen” beer in Germany, more commonly known as Oktoberfest.
Eliot Ness Vienna Lager pours deep amber in color with light
carbonation and a fresh malt nose. The body is rich and slightly sweet; the
palate has a gentle toastiness to it that increases into the finish where it
melds with a touch of chocolate and a subtle hop bite, which balances the
beer nicely. Alcohol
Is a bit above average at 6.2% by volume.
A very enjoyable beer along with pierogi and kielbasa, or poultry dishes.
Update 11/5/2016: Drinking a bottle of Eliot Ness for the first time in a long time. About a month past the enjoy by date and it is wonderful with a full chocolaty nutty aroma, a thick creamy reddish head and a deep reddish amber color. Thick full body of toasty nutty Munich malt, chocolate, grassy hop finish. Better than I remember it. A world class malt lovers delight. Rating it up from 4 to 5 stars; judged by style, this is as good as it gets.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
