Nothing fixes not-so-good beer like really good beer. Mind, you, I hadn’t had bad beer before enjoying an 11-ounce glass of Redneck Rye-Viera Red Rye Double IPA from the Grayton Beer Company of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. They had just been lackluster. I was at Taco Mac one fine Sunday in early May and the Leinenkugel Berliner Weiss and Kentucky Race Day IPA had not pleased me. Oh, but the Redneck Rye-viera certainly did.
This is the first beer I’ve had from Grayton, and if it’s any indication of the quality of their beer, it certainly won’t be the last. This is a fall seasonal brew (they call it a harvest ale) so I thought it odd to be enjoying it in May, but no matter. It was truly delicious. Here’s what the brewery says about Redneck Rye-Viera Red Rye Double IPA:
Our seasonally brewed Redneck Rye-viera is a red rye double IPA designed for cooler weather, especially along the Gulf Coast and in the South. Made with three types of rye and fresh hops that vary year-to-year, depending on availability, the hearty aromatic hop profile of this harvest ale makes for a smooth and spicy winter refresher with a bit more alcohol to keep you warm as the weather cools off.
Grayton Redneck Rye-Viera Red Rye Double IPA has an alcohol content of 8.1% by volume with 83 IBUs. The price was the only downside, at $7.50 for an 11-ounce draft glass this is high.
My glass of Grayton Redneck Rye-Viera Red Rye Double IPA arrived a beautiful dark reddish color with a medium head of creamy foam and a very grainy rye and fruit nose. Taking a sip, I got deep toasted rye bread and stewed malt flavors, berry and citrus fruits, all followed up by long dry grassy herbal aroma and bitterness.
This one definitely made up for my prior less than impressive exbeerience. All be on the lookout for this one to take home.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
